City Council to Decriminalize Skateboarding
One small step for FUNcouver, one giant leap for City Council
Vancouver, April 22, 2003... FUNcouver applauded reports that the Mayor's Office will be moving on
recommendations to 'decriminalize' skateboarding in Vancouver.
During last Fall's municipal election, FUNcouver asked candidates a series of 27 questions about their attitude
towards 'regulating fun' in the city. The decriminalization of skateboarding was one issue that met with the
approval of all candidates.
This week, Mayor Campbell and Councilor Jim Green will put forward a motion, which, if passed, will be the cause
of great rejoicing for many FUNcouverites. It reads:
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Street and Traffic By-Law be amended in the interim to permit the use of
skateboards and in-line skates on minor streets indefinitely and to eliminate police authority to seize and
detain skateboards.
"As we all know, the first step to overcoming a problem is admitting that there is a problem. Mayor
Campbell's motion is an admission that Vancouver has an institutionalized aversion to most things fun and a sign
that this Council is ready to do something to change the droning vibe that emanates from the corner of 12th and
Cambie," said Funcouver Campaign Manager Tim Crowhurst.
He added "About a month ago, we planted a seed with the Mayor's office. We suggested that - as participants
of the sport have vociferously contended for many years ˆskateboarding is not a crime". It appears that Mayor
Campbell agrees."
